Axel’s Waterfront Cafe’ is operated by fifth generation islanders and their kids. The small waterfront cafe’ is located at South Bass Island State Park at the western end of Catawba Avenue, about two miles from the Downtown District.
The food, the view, and the family friendly atmosphere is worth the bike or golf cart ride to get there.
Unpretentious, Axel’s offers a variety of sandwiches, salads, appetizers, breakfast items, handmade pizza, beverages and ice cream.
The menu is pretty simple and the food is pretty amazing.
Last year Axel’s rolled out the “Centennial” Burger in celebration of the National Park’s 100th Anniversary in 2016. With a few modifications the freshly ground, Prime Angus Sirloin half-pound patty is now the “Victory” Burger, a nod to Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial and the Hotel Victory that once dominated the 134-site State Park Campgrounds.

We use only US Grade Prime Angus Sirloin in our burgers!
That’s right. We hand form our patties from fresh Prime Angus Sirloin. No frozen pucks of beef served here. It isn’t easy being cheesy, so add a slice of Cheddar, Swiss, Provolone, American or Sirracha cheese to make cheesy easy.
We can also add a second half-pound patty for your own “Monumental” Burger, and you can name it whatever you want.
Our burgers and cheeseburgers are served on a fresh toasted roll with lettuce, tomato and onion. Pair any sandwich with a side of our hand cut French Fries made fresh daily. We drop them twice to achieve crispy greatness.
Want to share something else great? Our 16-inch pizza is great to share with the family. We hand make the crust, our delicious pizza sauce and our own Italian sausage. No par-baked cardboard crust here. Order with a variety of toppings, or try one of our specialty pizzas.
Axel’s also offers several vegetarian selections, including a Portabella mushroom sandwich, and salads.
Our boneless wings are a local favorite, but if you’re a purest we serve up classic wings as well. Take a look at our Breakfast and Sandwich menus for all your favorites.
Working out of a concession building at South Bass Island State Park, Axel’s is a familiar stop for islanders looking for a respite from the crowds downtown. The clean and well kept grounds around the restaurant overlook Lake Erie’s western shoreline and kids can enjoy the playground equipment while waiting for lunch.
Since we’re located adjacent to the entrance to the state campground, we also offer daily, overnight and weekly golf cart rentals as well. Call us at 419-285-0044 and we’ll design a cart package for your visit.
Axel’s is serving up breakfast, lunch and everything in between under a deck canopy that offers radiant heat during the chilly spring and fall evenings, and cover from the summer sun during the season. There is also a variety of umbrella covered tables and chairs on our expansive lawn overlooking Lake Erie.
We’re also located just a couple hundred feet from Put-in-Bay jet ski, kayak and boat rentals, and across the road from the island’s only 9-hole executive golf course.
Spend some time having fun after joining us for breakfast, taking a break for lunch, or after your fun filled day enjoying a snack, ice cream or something for dinner. Axel’s is open for the summer season right now.
